CLPA List of Upcoming DC Area Policy Meetings (May 15-May 19)

It's a busy policy week across the DC Area. In DC, there is a Legislative Meeting on Tuesday at noon. During the meeting, the Council will vote on B25-0164 - Comprehensive Policing and Justice Reform Temporary Amendment Act of 2023 which was rescheduled for this week. The bill aims to address various concerns related to policing and improve the overall justice system in the district. The bill includes a wide range of police reform measures. Some reforms include accountability and transparency enhancements, limitations on police practices, officer training and identification reforms, restrictions on using certain weapons, and policies and proposals related to opioid overdose prevention and police spending transparency. Once concluded, CLPA will provide a vote report on this bill.

In Prince George's County, the Prince George's County Council will have the second reading of the CB-042-2023, Prince George’s County Senior Housing Assistance Pilot Program Act of 2023. This bill establishes the Prince George's County Senior Housing Assistance Pilot Program (SHAPP) as a one-year temporary initiative. The program aims to provide financial assistance to low-income senior residents of Prince George's County for residential rent, residential mortgage payments, and residential real property tax payments. The Prince George's County Senior Housing Assistance Pilot Program Fund is created to allocate $1,000,000 of State funds for the program in Fiscal Year 2024. The Department of Family Services and the Department of Social Services will administer the program and establish application procedures, award criteria, and regulations. Those eligible for the program need to be 65 years or older, reside in Prince George's County for at least five years, and have a household of less than 40% of the Area Median Income. There are also limits on how many times an applicant can receive assistance within a given year. The SHAPP program will be evaluated after one year to determine if it should continue as a permanent program and fund.

CLPA will provide continual updates throughout the week on any new development here on our site, on Twitter: @LocalPolicyCTR and on Facebook @localpolicycenter. The following is a list of the most significant meetings taking place in the DC Area this week.
