Election Day is tomorrow! Be sure you understand what is required to vote or timelines by visiting the Maryland State Board of Elections website. Due to the election, it is a slow policy week across the DC Area, but a few very important meetings are still occurring.
The DC Council this week, the Committee on Housing & Executive Administration will discuss four bills on of those bills is B24-0649, the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women Amendment Act of 2022. This bill would require the DC Commission for Women, through the Mayor’s Office on Women’s Policy and initiatives1 (“the Office”), to develop guidelines on gender analysis, coordinate District agency gender analysis and training, and create a Citywide Action Plan to address and correct any deficiencies identified in agency analyses. CLPA will provide a deeper analysis of this bill at a later time. Other bills that we will review at a later time include the B24-0419, No Senior Hungry Omnibus Amendment Act of 2021, B24-0996, the Senior Nutrition, and Well-Being Equity Amendment Act of 2022.
Maryland legislative bodies are quiet this week, but the Prince George's County Board of Education will have the second reading of their Comprehensive School Boundary Proposal. Once approved, it would create boundaries for three new and six expanded facilities set to open in school years 2022-2023 through 2024-2025. The Montgomery County Board of Education will review a report that will be of interest to business owners in Montgomery as they will review the most recent report on Minority-, Female-, or Disabled-owned Business Procurement.
Virginia has slightly more legislative activity than Maryland this week. The Alexandria City Council will discuss the collection of taxes and annual consideration of authorization to write off property tax balances of less than twenty dollars. The policy relates to the city collecting delinquent local property taxes. The Arlington County Board will have a presentation of the 2023 General Assembly package for the County Board's priorities and a discussion about ranked-choice voting. Ranked-choice voting is an alternative system of voting allowing voters to "rank" candidates on a ballot in order of their preference instead of selecting just one.
